This scene is the climax of 'Bethany'. My first attempt
at film making in 2005 prior to any form of training.
The year is 1939,
Bethany is a removed girl in her early 20's living alone
on her family estate after the mysterious dissapearance
of her father ten years ago. Her solitude is broken
occasionally by visits from her childhood friend Charlie,
who helps her with the odd bit of business and gossip from
the town. He tries his hardest to get her out of the house
and into some sort of a life, but something holds her back,
she is haunted and transfixed by the prison she calls home.
On a day like any other, Bethany hears a car pull up,
her Mother has returned. A stern and unforgiving woman,
Bethany's mother hasn't changed at all. She too pleads with
Bethany to leave the grounds, but seemingly lacking the
same sincerity as Charlie. Rumors of a developer visiting
in town soon start to get back to Bethany, an enigmatic man
called Richard Sabian has been promising the townspeople
great fortune if they decide to support the impending
war effort.
Bethany's mother is very keen for her daughter to meet this
wealthy man and goes about arranging an evening for them.
Bethany is unhappy with the arrangement, but follows her
Mother's orders accordingly, it seems her Mother may be
looking out for her best interests after all. Meanwhile
Charlie's father, Wilson, who used to tend to the grounds,
comes to visit Bethany for what he fears may be the last
time, after passing on his wisdom and wishes to Bethany
he is confronted alone by the Mother, in a scene where
we discover her intentions may not be as innocent
as first seemed.
Bethany reluctantly adorns the elegant dress her mother
brought for her, and she finally meets the man she has
heard so much about.. Richard Sabian. Will Sabian be
her saviour? will her life of solitude and regret
finally be over?
